throughout the day, exploring beautiful beaches and also the historical
environment of Crete or stay late at night enjoying a drink with music
by the sea.
Next to Matala is Red Beach, one of the best beaches in
the world that you can visit by walking through a path that starts from
a village.
Next to Matala (5km) is the beach of Komos. Long sandy beach that even in the summer you will never feel crowded.
On the same beach you will find nests by the turtle Caretta Caretta who returns to the area every year to lay her eggs.
For
those who are interested in Cretan history, Phaistos (Minoan Palace),
Agia Triada (Minoan Villa) and the ancient city of Gortys are very close
to Matala.
The artificial caves in the cliff of the Matala bay were
created in the Neolithic Age. Matala was the port of Phaistos during the
Minoan period. In the year 220 BC., Matala was occupied by the
Gortynians, and during the Roman period, Matala became the port of
Gortys. In the 1st and 2nd centuries, the caves were used as tombs.
In the 1960s, the caves were occupied by hippies. Following the hippie
period in Matala, the Matala Beach Festival has been established in
recent years and takes place at the end of June.A time travel with a lot
